The first of the 2014-15 season Notts. F.A. Cup finals saw Farndon United of the Newark Football Alliance take on Mattersey FC who play in the Gainsborough & District Sunday League.

As usual whenever I go to the F.A. finals, I receive a very warm welcome from the Notts F.A. Council members - even though it is 20 years since I actually served on the Council. Mick Kilbee and Malc Fox are friends from long ago and it's always a pleasure to be in their company.

Not very up to speed with Sunday football, particularly when it comes to teams that are 20+ miles from where I live. Thus I knew nothing about the teams on show tonight, but thanks to good friend Rob Townsend I was quickly brought up to speed. Farndon are top of the Newark Football Alliance Premier Division, whilst opponents Mattersey lie third in the Gainsborough & District Sunday League Premier Division.

Rob had earlier in the season said he would be pleased to make a donation to the "maggie's" fund - we've not met since, but as I entered the ground, he was the first person to greet me and duly made good on his promise. Very, many thanks, Rob.

Turned out to be a quiet game - although both teams, on occasion,  did manage to  play some decent stuff. Farndon went in at the break a goal to the good - a neat stooping header at the far post from DARYL PRICE, after a ball into the penalty area had been headed back across the six yard box by Ricky North. H-T 1-0

Farndon netted the games only other goal within three minutes of the re-start. The ball was fired across the goalmouth from the left and an unmarked RHYS LEWIS stabbed home from close range.

With plenty of time left to try and get back into the game, Mattersey tried their best to break through a solid United defence, but in the end the United back line held firm and on the night, it has to be said that the Farndon victory was well deserved. F-T 2-0
