After a faily low goal haul since the new year, our three March games have so far delivered 16 goals! With all goals being worth £0.75 to "maggie's", let's hope this goal glut continues for a while....

Shake

3rd team

Great to meet up with Rob Hornby again - not seen Rob for a while. He's been in hospital for a short stay, and only came out on Friday evening - but there was no way this was going to keep the tough bugger away from his football.

I told you - no pics!!

The pitch at the Parish Hall is in superb condition, despite the crappy winter weather it's been subjected to. A big hand for the groundsman - well done!

We'd just settled pitchside when the first goal went in, young TOM WIDDOWSON clipping home from close range after Dominic Airey had crossed the ball in from the right. The goal timed by Mr. Hornby at 76 seconds!

Wayne Cooke had a great chance to double Selston's lead five minutes later, but steered his effort wide of the far post. Damien James had the next chance for the home team, but his goal bound effort was deflected away for a corner.

Boots were not at the races at all, in any way, shape or form, and the only surprise was that it took until the 26th minute for Selston to record their second goal. After the ball was played into the visitors' area, there were a few hacks at it before it fell for WAYNE COOKE to hammer a neat volley past keeper Darren Hurst. In reality, Boots had enough chances to clear the danger beforehand, but failed miserably.

Cooke (hidden) makes it 2-0

James had another effort saved by Hurst's feet on the half hour  as Selston piled on the pressure, but they failed to add to their  tally before the break. H-T 2-0

Boots made two changes at the break, bringing on Jordan Blair and Alex Palmer. These two forward minded players certainly livened things up for the visitors - and within two minutes of the restart Blair brought out a decent save from Jake Simpson after he had broken away down the right.

Three minutes later, Athletic were back in the game - Blairs' powerful drive was parried by Simpson, but the ball fell kindly to MITCHEL JACKSON who, although under pressure, had the relatively simple task of firing home the loose ball.

1-2

With 13 minutes of the second half played, it was all square when Blair pinged a ball through to ALEX PALMER who made no mistake slotting the ball past Simpson.

2-2

Selston responded well, and the introduction of Grant Hackett into the midfield certainly helped steady the boat. The home team re-took the lead on the hour mark, the Chemists' centre-half CHRIS HUTCHINSON diverting the ball into his own net as he tried to block a ball in from the right by James.

3-2

Cooke and Airey combined well on 69, bringing out a smart save from Hurst. Cooke then tried a spectacular overhead kick from an Airey corner, but managed only to hit the ball high, wide and into the school playground next door.

Overhead....

...over the fence

On 78, James beat Mickey Lucas to the ball and crossed the ball straight into the path of WAYNE COOKE who swept it first time past Hurst. Steve Smith replaced Cooke soon after and almost grabbed a fifth for Selston, heading just wide after Hackett had nodded a corner towards the far stick.

Cooke (again out of shot) makes it 4-2

With just four minutes left to play, Ricky Robinson received a straight red from Mr. Bingham - apparently for kicking out at an opponent. F-T 4-2
